The newly developed Mountain Bike Skills course is
located within Fairburn Activity and Conference Centre's
grounds, allowing immediate access and egress to and
from the Centre.
The skills course is not a scenic
little bike ride, if that is your desire try the "Orrin
loop".
The skills course is primarily aimed at raising the
awareness of the core skills necessary to ride a
mountain bike safely and successfully while having fun
and raising the riders confidence. The core skills
are the riding positions used to distribute the body
weight to its best advantage, braking, gear selection
and cadence, steering and cornering, choosing the best
line of approach and run off to and from an obstacle,
climbing and descending various gradients.
The site has a variety of terrain from gentle slopes to
steep little climbs and descents with a selection of
challenging obstacles from "Nessie's humps" to the
"Double drop" the Balance beams and Seesaw all
aimed to improve balance, awareness, skills and
confidence. There is always the option of the
"Chicken run" for those that feel they are not quite up
to the challenge, but they generally do try once they
see their friends enjoying it.
